Installing a Water Heater Blanket
Modern water heaters are designed to provide more insulation so as to reduce the standby heat loss. It uses the water heater blanket in the outside of the water heater using the fiberglass insulation. This fiberglass insulation has a vinyl film on the outside, and it is wrapped around the tank with the ends taped together. It should be the right size of the tank so as to prevent air from being blocked to create an air flow that is smoothly integrated to the insulation. A water heater blanket would ensure that there is less heat being lost in the water heater, and this could lessen the amount of water and energy being used, making way for less overall cost.
Nowadays, a water heater blanket would definitely be efficient, since water heaters can be quite expensive even after purchasing the product. Water heaters are among the most expensive and biggest energy consuming applications done in the household, since it continuously generates heat and water for incessant use all day long. This is especially true in cases wherein people use storage tanks instead of the hot water services that are becoming “on-demand”. In cases such as this, it is important to use a water heater blanket that costs to as little as $10 for better insulation. This insulating jacket could reduce heat loss from 25% to as much as 40%, while saving about 9% of the annual water heating costs, which can be more valuable when used in other expenses. That can be a big savings by just purchasing and installing a unit that costs approximately $10.
To install a water heater blanket, the tank top insulation should be cut to fit around the piping in the tip of the tank, and then tape the cut section. Fold the corners of the tank top insulation downward and then tape to the sides. Position the equipment around the circumference of the tank, making sure that the ends to not come together over the access panels. Secure it in place with the belts that are being provided, making sure that the belts do not go over the access panels. The belts should also be made to fit snugly over the water heater blanket but not to compress more than 20% of its thickness. In cases wherein the water heater has a temperature relief valve, the water heater blanket should be installed outside this valve.
There are also cases wherein the equipment should be compressed and cut first to make sure it fits perfectly around the water heater. Lastly, locate the four corners of the access panel, and then cut in an X shape the water heater blanket from corner to corner of the access pane, while folding the triangular flaps underneath the water heater blanket. It can only be installed in water heaters that do not have a leaking tank. For safety purposes, it is best to purchase a new water heater if the tank leaks and then installing a water heater blanket according to the rule of the manufacturer.
